bathing a new born baby

Giving Your Baby a Bath

In the first week to 10 ten days you will want to give your new baby a sponge bath until the umbilical cord and/or circumcision have healed. Use a soft wash cloth and plain warm water. Gently wipe the entire baby's face, behind the ears, under the neck, and then rest of the body. We recommend using soft cotton moistened with water for cleaning around the eyes and the cotton safety swaps moistened with water for around the nostrils and ears. These swabs are designed to help prevent entry too deep into your baby's ear canal.

When your baby is 2-8 weeks old you can use the small baby tub that fits in your kitchen sink or in the regular tub, whichever is easier for you. You want to test the water before putting your baby into the tub to make sure it is not to hot. Between 90 and 100 degrees is an ideal temperature for your baby. You will want to gather everything we need before hand such as gentle baby wash for hair and body, wash cloth, towel, lotion, diaper, and clothes. It is very important to never leave your baby alone in the bath or changing table.

Once your baby is able to hold its head up and back straight it is time to upgrade to the grown-up tub. You may want to use a plastic bath seat and definitely a non-slip bath mat on the bottom. Another great safety product is the padded faucet cover to prevent bumps and bruises. Only fill the tub with a few inches of water and never over waist-high (in sitting position). At first your baby maybe overwhelmed with the size of the larger tub. You can show your baby that bath time can be fun by lightly splashing and introducing varies bath toys.
